The water tower at Wellingborough had been redundant for some time.GMD were commissioned to survey the site and then design and develop a safe means of dismantling the high water tower. A main concern was to the surrounding buildings and the need to avoid any damage.
The first task was to separate the tank from its supporting structure. This was achieved by working out of a 120 foot ‘skyjack hoist’. Then a 200 tone crane lifted the tank off and lowered it to the ground, upon which it was processed and sent for recycling.
A smaller 90 tone crane was then used to lower the supports which had been cut into smaller pieces.
